Become a part of the solution
The holiday season is usually the high point of a retailer's year. Unfortunately, it is also a time when retail theft is epidemic. Not just shoplifting of a lipstick or a CD but organized theft of inventory from warehouses and stockrooms.

The Dallas Police Department and area retailers are coming together to fight organized retail theft. This is organized crime run by "bosses" who order quantities of goods that are stolen by thieves for sale on eBay, Craig’s List or from the trunks of cars and at flea markets. This includes medications, baby food and tennis shoes as just a few examples.

Eighty-eight percent of crime in Dallas is property crime. It is estimated that Dallas County lost $20 million in sales tax revenue in 2010 because of retail theft.

Jamie Bourne from Target said, "We’re talking about people who make a living stealing from retail establishments and reselling this product on the street."

The large retailers including Target, Best Buy, Tom Thumb, Kroger and Neiman Marcus are involved and cooperating. The new approach teams stores with police and prosecutors to go after organized theft rings responsible for large scale theft and fencing operations. The District Attorney's office is committed to prosecuting those behind the theft rings to get them off the street and send a message that Dallas is going to be tough on this crime.

You can be a part of the solution by refusing to purchase anything that is priced too low to be legitimate. As Police Chief David Brown said at a recent press conference, "If it sounds too good to be true, it's stolen, that's just the bottom line."

Recycle your Christmas tree at a Dallas Home Depot store
If you remove all tinsel, ornaments, lights, nails and tree stands before dropping it off, you can recycle your Christmas tree at one of these seven Home Depot stores. Tree recycling will be available from Monday, Dec. 26 through Jan. 2.

Remember, watering restrictions are now in effect
Due to one of the most severe droughts on record, the Dallas City Manager has called for Stage 1 watering restrictions as of Mon., Dec. 12. Dallas's six water-supply reservoirs are about 25 percent depleted and we'll all be helped by a twice-a-week watering schedule. Learn more
