Ann Margolin, Dallas City Council District 13
Happy Holidays!
This is the season of new beginnings! I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah or Happy Kwanzaa. I wish you great joy as you celebrate and spend time with loved ones. May our shared hopes for a bright and prosperous new year be fulfilled. It is a great honor to serve the residents of District 13 and all of the citizens of Dallas. That is your gift to me ... and I thank you.
Say thanks to a soldier who's away from home
As part of its "Let's Say Thanks" program, Xerox has made it easy for us to send an e-postcard (designed by a child) to U.S. military personnel stationed overseas. Join me now in saying thanks. Let's remember those who put their lives on the line so that we can be free and live in peace.
Two ideas for holiday giving
Encourage the freedom to read
Given city budget cutbacks, the Dallas Public Library welcomes (and needs) gifts of new or slightly worn books, DVDs and CDs. Especially valued are recent best-selling books. Donations of materials can be received at any branch location. Can you assist our libraries in any way? Here are ways you can help.

Make the season bright for Parkland's newborns
Each year for Christmas, fabric gift bags are distributed to all babies at Parkland Hospital. The local chapter of Newborns In Need organizes this effort and needs receiving blankets, sleepers, hats, booties and other items for both preemies and full-term babies. Can you help? If so, here's who to contact to help welcome these precious angels to our world.
Please make safe choices this holiday season
Remember that virtually all car break-ins happen when valuables are visible. Please hide valuables ... and be alert when walking to and from your car. There are also many ways you can prevent home burglaries which seem to increase during the holidays. Finally, as a special request, please come home safely and do not drink and drive.
Don't let City of Dallas holidays disrupt your plans
In addition to Christmas Day on Fri., Dec. 25, city offices will be closed for business on Thurs., Dec 31 (a furlough day) and Fri., Jan. 1. So what does this mean for citizens with OneDAY Friday trash collection? When will recreation centers and libraries be open? What other city services will be disrupted? Here's is what you need to know.
Avoid the winter's chills ... and bills
The city's Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to increase the energy efficiency of dwellings owned and operated by low-income and elderly persons. The program can also reduce total expenditures and improve the health and safety of families. Could you or someone you know benefit from this program? What a nice gift to tell them about it!
