The Dallas Police Department currently has 3 unique volunteer programs. All volunteers must attend a one-hour orientation class plus complete a training course for the desired program. Training classes are offered at the seven substations and range between 2 to 12 hours, depending on the program requirements.

Our current programs are:

  • VIP-Volunteers in Patrol: This program is designed to reduce crime by having citizens patrol their own neighborhoods and reporting any suspicious or criminal activity to the police.

  • CHIPS-Citizens Helping in Parking Solutions: Citizens are trained to write parking citations for handicapped parking violations in areas such as local malls or shopping centers.

  • COPS-Citizens Offering Police Support: This program provides an opportunity for citizens to work hand-in-hand with officers at the substation conducting various office and clerical related tasks.

NOTE: ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS ARE STRICTLY
NON-CONFRONTATIONAL!

No classes scheduled for February and they are still working on finalizing dates for March.

Dallas CERT training promotes a partnering effort between the Office of Emergency Management, Dallas Fire-Rescue, Dallas Police Department and the Citizens of Dallas. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, businesses, and places of worship to apply all aspects of their CERT training if a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community’s professional response.

The program is for individuals 18 years or older who are interested in learning more about how Dallas Fire-Rescue is organized and how we conduct operations.

The department’s multifaceted operations will be explored during the 8-week fire academy. Each night on Thursdays, participants will meet at the fire academy and learn about various subjects such as Dallas Fire-Rescue’s hiring and training process, apparatus familiarization, hazardous materials team, USAR (Urban Search and Rescue), fire tactics and strategies, along with other engaging topics.

Participants will also receive valuable life safety CPR certification training. The fire inspection division will give an overview of their operations and provide information on volunteer opportunities.

The last week of the 8-week program will be comprised of a full day on Saturday of hands-on training and demonstrations such as vehicle extrication and rappelling. At the conclusion of the academy, there will be a graduation ceremony at the training center with certificate presentation and photographs.

Application enrollment period is from January 29 to February 12th, 2010. The class begins on Thursday, February 25th, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. Criminal background checks will be conducted on all applicants for the CFA.
